Who needs a cellphone camera when you have a pen and paper? Drawn to Flavor highlights local dishes and drinks in vivid watercolor. In these posts, Illustrator and journalist Josh Kramer tries to honor all the energy and creativity that goes into making food beautiful and delicious.
One H Street restaurant that should not be overlooked is casual neighborhood tavern The Liberty Tree (1016 H Street NE).
Chef and Co-owner Graig Glufling went to culinary school in Rhode Island. Later, after working at well-known D.C. restaurants like Vidalia and Tabbard Inn, he created the menu at Matchbox as their first executive chef. “I like to think I do comfort food,” Glufling says.
The Liberty Tree opened in 2010, and features both New England classics and brick oven pizza. Plus you’ve got to love a place with an American Revolution theme. The actual “Liberty Tree” was an elm tree in Boston that was used in demonstrations by the Sons of Liberty against the Stamp Act. Their 1760 motto: “No Taxation Without Representation.” Sound familiar?
It’s a great place to have brunch, and the breakfast pizza is an indulgent favorite. It has a white cream sauce and is topped with shredded mozzarella, crumbled bacon, thick-cut homefries, drizzled maple-syrup, and of course — a sunnyside egg. “I’m a big fan of egg on pizza,” Glulfing says. I couldn’t agree more.
