After postponing a campus event featuring a screening of Milk over questions of LGBT advocacy, Catholic University has approved the program to be rescheduled.
The “Milk and Cookies” event, organized by the College Democrats, was scheduled to feature a screening of the Harvey Milk biopic and speakers on the “effect of the gay rights movement on the Democratic Party.” It was postponed by Catholic University officials after a flyer that read “Kick Off LGBT Awareness Month!” raised questions about “whether the event had changed in nature from one of education to one of advocacy.”
In a statement released today, a spokesperson for the school said the director of Campus Activities “met with the Chair and another leader of the College Democrats chapter to discuss their proposed educational program about the impact of the gay rights movement on the Democratic Party.”
“Following a discussion and review of the program’s educational intent, the Director of Campus Activities approved the rescheduling of the event,” the statement said.” The College Democrats indicated that they will attempt to reschedule the program so that it takes place within the next month, hopefully by the end of October.”
The College Democrats said on Facebook last week that they received approval “from the administration and we are currently in the planning process for our Milk and Cookies event. We are working with our guests to find a date for the event, and we will have more information in the coming weeks.”
Students said the event was originally postponed because of the size of a rainbow flag on a flyer promoting the event, as well as the words “Kick Off LGBT Awareness Month.” After being made aware of the advertising, a Catholic spokesperson said school administrators “called into question whether the event had changed in nature from one of education to one of advocacy.”
