If you see an increase in first responders in areas of the city this Sunday and Monday, don’t scream “Ebola!” and evacuate D.C.: A “full-scale terrorism exercise” is planned for this weekend at the Navy Yard, former Walter Reed site, Georgetown University Hospital and D.C. Emergency Operations Center in Southeast.
The exercise, which will run from 8 p.m. Sunday to 9 a.m. Monday, “is designed to test and evaluate District emergency operations, techniques, procedures, and command and control relationships among first responders and District federal partners and stakeholders as they deal with a scenario of multiple simultaneous domestic terrorist attacks,” according to a release from the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. “The goal of the exercise is to ensure that government agencies at every level are prepared to take coordinated action to protect the public in the event of an actual emergency caused by an act of terrorism in the District.”
“Residents and business near the exercise site will see an increased first responder (fire and police) presence and should not be alarmed by this during the exercise time,” the release says, emphasis included. Good luck with that!
