To only use Uber for transportation in D.C., one website estimates that you’d spend $19,107.67 annually to get around.

NerdWallet attempted to calculate the cost of owning a car and using ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft so people could see if it’s financially reasonable to ditch their vehicle. While there are a number of problems with this (doesn’t include parking tickets, people don’t exclusively drive), it’s still interesting to see how much a person could spend on the luxury app-based ride services which are becoming commonplace.

Here’s how they calculated the numbers:

We calculated Lyft and Uber costs with numbers from the federal highway administration and census bureau to approximate car usage. We used the rates provided by Lyft and Uber on their websites to calculate cost per mile, cost per minute and the base rate for each ride. We didn’t account for surge pricing or Lyft Line or Uber Pool — the carpool rideshare options that can cut costs up to 50 percent less than our estimates.

Using that formula, the annual Uber estimate for Washington, D.C. is $19,107.67, and the annual Lyft estimate is $19,528.17. If a person wanted to spend what NerdWallet estimates it costs to own a car in D.C. per year — $11,490.15 — you could only take 12.75 Uber or Lyft rides per week.
