The controversy over the Washington football team’s name isn’t just a social issue anymore; it’s a political one.
If you were tuned into last night’s Monday Night Football game to see Washington miraculously beat Dallas in overtime, you probably caught this ad Republican Ed Gillespie ran as part of his campaign to unseat Virginia Senator Mark Warner.
The ad takes aim at Warner’s refusal to take a stand against a bill that targets the Washington football team. The bill would revoke the NFL’s tax-exempt status if it continues to support the team’s name.
In the ad, Gillespie says ““I’ll oppose the anti-[Washington] bill. Let’s focus on creating jobs, raising take-home pay, and making our nation safer, and let the [Washington football team] handle what to call their team.”
In a statement, Oneida Indian Nation spokesperson Joel Barkin said “the last time a Virginia Republican senate candidate actively promoted a racial slur, voters rightly rejected him. As with former Senator George Allen, Ed Gillespie will likely lose the election promoting a dictionary-defined slur, but perhaps there will be a place for him on Dan Snyder’s payroll when it is all over.”
