A majority of likely voters support an initiative that would legalize marijuana in D.C. and an effort to bring the Olympics to the city in 2024.

According to a City Paper/WAMU poll, 52 percent of likely voters surveyed support Initiative 71, and 51 percent of those 591 people support bringing the 2024 summer Olympics to D.C.

The biggest support for Initiative 71, which would allow adults over the age of 21 to legally possess up to two ounces of marijuana and cultivate three marijuana plants, is seen in Wards 1 (65 percent), 2 (64 percent) and 3 (61 percent). The biggest support for hosting the summer Olympics in 2024 was seen in Wards 7 (84 percent) and 8 (64 percent).

For supporters of the Olympics looking for ways to make their argument, here’s an example of how not to do it. In a Bloomberg View column, Albert R. Hunt writes about potential benefits for “political Washington” from the Olympics, which “could bridge, for a while, the petty partisanship and revitalize the capital.”

The poll also asked likely voters about support for a homeless shelter in their neighborhood, with 45 percent in support and 33 percent opposed. Opposition was biggest in Wards 4 and 5.
