Missing Relisha Rudd. Via MPD.The search for Relisha Rudd, the child who went missing from the city’s family homeless shelter earlier this year, will continue today, her ninth birthday.
The Black and Missing Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about missing persons, will hand out flyers with volunteers at the Stadium Armory Metro station, across the street from the D.C. General shelter where Rudd was living with her mother and siblings.
Co-founder Derrica N. Wilson told DCist the group has partnered with the Metropolitan Police Department for tonight’s event, which will begin at 5 p.m. Groups will also hand out flyers at New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE, near the hotel where Rudd was last seen with Kahlil Tatum. The shelter janitor, who police say adducted Rudd, was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“We want to continue to keep her story alive and out there,” Wilson said. “We’re not going to rest until this little girl come home.”
Rudd was last seen with Tatum on March 1. Although Rudd’s family had interactions with the Child and Family Services Agency, the Department of Behavioral Health, the Department of Human Services and D.C. Public Schools, a city report concluded that nothing could have been done to prevent her disappearance. The conclusion, challenged by Councilmember Jim Graham, was defended by city officials, who are preparing for an increase in family homelessness this winter.
Anyone interested in participating should arrive at either location at 5 p.m. Wilson noted that Rudd’s disappearance “affects so many people. They feel so connected to this little girl.”
“So many people failed her,” she said, “and so many people want to help recover her.”
