As authorities continue searching for arrestee Kenneth Clayton, who escaped from the Psychiatric Institute of Washington yesterday morning, new information as to how he escaped has come to light.

The D.C. Department of Corrections say that officers transported Clayton from the United Medical Center in Southeast to the PIW at approximately 2:25 a.m. After he was processed, Clayton was moved to a locked area in the facility “where uniformed personnel are not allowed to enter nor have visual contact due to the Institute’s medical privacy protocols.”

At 10:40 a.m., authorities say Clayton “fled” through a back door of the restricted wing he was in. After officers were notified of his escape, a preliminary search of the immediate surrounding area came up empty. Police are asking anyone with information of his whereabouts—or someone who might have seen him—to call 911.
