FRIDAY
PHOTOS: FotoWeek DC returns Saturday through November 16 with “exhibitions, projections, film screenings and lectures” across the city. A party Friday at the Former Spanish Ambassador’s Residence (2801 16th Street NW) kicks off the celebration with live music, open bars and photography. Ticket $65. Must be over 21. 7:30 to 11 p.m.
SWEETS: Buttercream Bakeshop is the newest project from pastry chef Tiffany MacIsaac (formerly of Neighborhood Restaurant Group). The shop makes its debut today at Cork Market & Tasting Room (1805 14th Street NW) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. A second popup is planned on November 14. Stop in this afternoon for a slice of the cookie monster—a brown sugar and chocolate chip cake with cookie dough layers, cookies and cream frosting and a topping of mini oatmeal cream pies. Other menu items include Fruity Pebbles Rice Krispy treats and coffee-raspberry marshmallows. —Travis Mitchell
JAZZ: Baltimore native Romeir Mendez is continuing the tradition of great bassists to come out of this area. He will lead a band on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. The ensemble features a must-see horn section in the form of trumpeter Terrell Stafford and bassist Tim Warfield. Allyn Johnson, arguably D.C.’s finest jazz pianist, is also in the group. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $20 in advance/$25 at the door. —Sriram Gopal
SKA: You probably know about the cringeworthy sounding (but actually really great) emo revival going on right now, if you read any music websites with regularity. But what you might not know about is the small ska revival going on right now. Yes, ska did die in the ’90s, but like the best zombie movies, it managed to find a way to come back. Some of the best new ska bands are hitting the Black Cat’s main stage tonight led by D.C. ska-punk band Kill Lincoln. Who says you’re too old to pickituppickituppickituuuuupppppp? $12, 9 p.m. — Matt Cohen
