You might be seeing some shiny new firetrucks out on the streets of D.C. soon. Mayor Vince Gray announced today that six new pumper engine fire trucks have been delivered, with four more scheduled to be delivered by the end of the December.
In the past couple of years, the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services has come under fire for the condition of its vehicles, some of which had been found rotting in a Wisconsin junkyard.
As a result, $24 million in capital funds were allocated in teh FYF14 budget to purchase new firetrucks and ambulances. In August of 2013, Gray announced the addition of 30 new ambulances. Following on his pledge to provide new vehicles for the D.C. FEMS, the new pumper engine fire trucks will be in service once employee training is completed by the end of the month. Five new ladder trucks are expected to be put in service by March of 2015.
Additionally, “more than 90 young people who have graduated from District public high schools have joined FEMS through the cadet program” since August of 2011, with two cadet classes graduating this month, boosting the amount of paramedics, EMTS, and firefighters in the District.
“As calls for emergency assistance increase, these new purchases and additional first responders will bolster our readiness to respond to emergencies in the District,”Gray said in a statement. “This reaffirms my commitment to improve the quality of life for all District residents and ensure every neighborhood is safe.”
