Officials from 22 local governments have endorsed bringing the Olympics to the D.C. region in 2024.

The Metropolitan Washington Council on Governments — whose members include Mayor Vince Gray and Council Chair Phil Mendelson — approved a resolution yesterday that “unanimously endorses the initiative to bring the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games to the National Capital Region.”

“Washington 2024 has created a public-private partnership to creatively advance the National Capital Region as the best location in the United States and the world for hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, based on the visionary theme of promoting national unity and showcasing all the capacity and assets of our nation’s capital and the region,” the resolution states. Washington 2024, led by businessman Russ Ramsey and local sports team owner Ted Leonsis, has launched a website and hand sign as part of the bid.
