Here it is: the first new Fugazi record in 13 years. Well, it’s actually an old Fugazi record—the first music they ever recorded—but available for your listening pleasure for the first time ever.
As a demo record, the quality is surprisingly good—better than a lot of bands debut, mastered records—but the structure of the songs provides a window into how meticulous the band’s songwriting process was. Most of the songs on First Demo were eventually retooled and rerecorded to appear on 13 songs, a compilation of their first two EPs.
The songs mostly sound the same, but more…incomplete; as if they’re still experimenting and trying out new ideas for song directions. That’s most apparent on the demo version of “Waiting Room,” arguably the band’ s most known song. Joe Lally’s iconic, commanding bass riff isn’t as front and center in the demo version, and Ian MacKaye’s vocals get a more psychedelic treatment in the beginning.
