After relocating to Prince George’s County from D.C., the National Children’s Museum (formally the Capital Children’s Museum) will return to the District in 2015.
According to a release, the museum is moving back because of “challenges such as lack of nearby public transportation, available space, and affordable options to expand the building” at its current location at the National Harbor. The museum says that, while it’s welcomed “more than 250,000 visitors” in the two years it’s been open, it has still “difficult to extend the museum’s exhibits and programming to a broader community of children, families, and tourists” in the area.
Although the search for a new location in D.C. is still ongoing, the museum’s return already has the support of some local lawmakers. In a statement, Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) expressed his support of the museum’s return, stating that he’s “delighted to welcome the museum and its dedicated staff back to the District.” He added that he “[anticipates] the new administration will be eager to embrace such an important institution that will benefit children of all ages for years to come.”
The NCM’s Board says they plan to announce the new location as soon as a site is confirmed. In the meantime, they’ll continue their operations until then.
