Space nerds! Did you see Interstellar? Did you like it? That’s irrelevant, because this article has nothing to do with Interstellar, other than space.
Tonight and early tomorrow morning, the Leonids meteor shower will be visible over most of the mid-Atlantic and Eastern seaboard, including D.C. According to NASA, the peak of the shower is to occur later tonight and just before sunrise tomorrow morning.
“For best viewing, wait until after midnight on Nov. 18, with the peak of the shower occurring just before sunrise,” Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office said in a release. During the peak of the shower, you can expect to see 10 to 15 meteors per hour.
The Leonids are “bits of debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle,” which visits the inner solar system every 33 years, leaving behind a stream of dusty debris. NASA says these streams “have drifted across the November portion of Earth’s orbit, making it highly visible in the sky tonight and tomorrow morning.
So where’s a good place to see it in D.C.? NASA recommends locations “away from city lights,” and to find a spot where you can lay flat on your back and look straight up. So the National Mall would probably be a good spot. Bundle up, though.
