A recent Forbes article declared the D.C. area as the nation’s new number one new tech hot spot, and a subsequent WAMU article analyzed whether or not D.C.—long thought of as a government town, for obvious reasons—is now becoming more associated as a tech hub.
So is it? Looks to be that way, but more in the bordering parts of Northern Virginia then in D.C. proper. According to a new report from personal finance Web site NerdWallet, Arlington, Va. is the best city in the country for new entrepreneurs.
The study analyzed a variety of factors—such as access to funding based on small business loans per capita, networking opportunities, mentorship opportunities, economic conditions based on income levels and unemployment rates, and affordability based on cost of living—to determine which cities were best for young entrepreneurs to set up shop.
Arlington earned the number one spot “thanks to its large young and well-educated population:”
Arlington earns the top spot thanks to its large young and well-educated population. Nearly 28% of the city’s residents are 25 to 34 years old, and at least 74% of all residents over 25 hold a bachelor’s degree or higher — both of these figures are the highest in the nation. The local economy is also quite robust, with a low unemployment rate and the highest per capita income of all places on our list. But Arlington, according to NerdWallet, isn’t alone as one of the top city’s in the region. Washington, D.C. itself came in at number 14. So yeah, come to the D.C. area, young entrepreneurs. Just don’t act like a preppy douche, OK?
