ZooLights, the free annual holiday tradition at the National Zoo, will return on November 28. As one of DCist’s favorite winter occasions, we asked the Friends of the National Zoo to fill us in on some of the numbers behind the event.

  • 500,000: The number of LED lights used in the displays
  • 31: The number of animal light displays created by said LED lights
  • 32: The number of nights the lights will be turned on for
  • 180,000: The number of people who attended Zoo Lights last year
  • Two: The number of people who played Panda Claws in a promotional video
  • One: The number of people who played Panda Claws in the video who couldn’t dance
  • Four: The length in minutes of the laser light show that will be projected onto the Elephant Community Center while “Frosty the Snowman” plays.
  • 1,100: The number of performers from 25 groups who will perform during ZooLights
  • 2,240: The number of hours it took eight people over seven work-weeks to install the displays
