This is a bummer: longtime Woodley Park pub, Murphy’s of D.C., will close for good on Sunday.

“Our lease, after a long, hard-fought battle, is not being renewed,” general manager Mary Pereira tells DCist over the phone. She didn’t say if there’s any chance that it could reopen in a new space, like Mr. Smith’s of Georgetown did, but she wasn’t optimistic about it.

Murphy’s has been a staple of the Woodley Park neighborhood for nearly 30 years—it first opened up at its current location in 1986. “We’ve had quite a homey, family feel for a lot of people, and it’s been a home away from home for quite a few people for years,” Pereira, who has worked for the pub for the entirety its been open, says. “But, unfortunately, we’re in a circumstance where that’s not going to be the case anymore.”

Murphy’s will go dark after last call on Sunday. “It’s really tough for staff members, some of whom have been here for more than 20 years,” Pereira says. “We’re very sad, and we’re very sad for the neighborhood folks, who we’ll miss tremendously.”
