While some people may look forward to the getting of gifts during the holiday season, I prefer receiving cards, especially ones with long letters about family vacations, job updates and soccer season outcomes.

Cards that also double as little pieces of art with local flavor? Send them my way.

Grey Moggie, owned by Melanie Ouellette Karlins and operated out of a Capitol Hill carriage house, creates letterpress cards, totes and posters. While some cards could be appreciated by anyone — Have you tried it with fruit cake? — Grey Moggie also has a whole section devoted to “local love.” Holiday options include “all I want for Christmas is an inoffensive football team name” and “all I want for Christmas is to pet a baby panda.”

Individual cards cost $5, while a set of six costs $18. Cards can be purchased online or at the downtown holiday market (December 5 and 6) and Grump @ Artisphere (December 14).

Local artist Susanne Kasielke has a more traditional option available online, while shoppers can also check out the selection at local shops like Paper Source and Groovy DC Cards & Gifts.
