As if you needed a reminder that everything you post online can be seen by virtually everyone: a GOP staffer has resigned after she posted a Facebook rant criticizing Sasha and Malia Obama’s appearance at the annual turkey pardoning ceremony.
Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Rep. Stephen Fincher (TN-8) took to Facebook to criticized the Obama daughters for their dress and appearance at the annual ceremony, in which the president makes a lot of awful dad jokes and then pardons a turkey or two.
“Dear Sasha and Malia: I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play,” Lauten wrote on her Facebook page, which anyone who is her “friend” can view and post to literally anywhere else on the Internet, which is exactly what happened.
“Then again, our mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter,” the note went on to say. “So I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department.”
Of course, Lauten’s message went viral and she received a huge dose of criticism for it. She later wrote an apology, writing “when I first posted on Facebook I reacted to an article and I quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager.” And now, MSNBC reports that Lauten is to resign over the incident.
Lesson learned for the one millionth time: do not post things that might get you into trouble anywhere on the Internet. OK? OK.
