Mayor Vince Gray and his administration don’t leave office until January 2, but he’ll be giving his farewell speech a tad earlier than that.
Gray’s office announced today that he’ll be delivering a farewell address on December 17 at Dunbar High School. Gray was defeated in the April primary election to Ward 5 Councilmember Muriel Bowser. Over the four years Gray has been in office, the city has grown significantly, with nearly 40,000 new residents who now call D.C. home since 2010.
During his four years as mayor, some of Gray has worked hard to make D.C. a better place for all, with such initiatives like his ambitious 20-year sustainability plan, his Age-Friendly DC initiative, and a push to offer more incentives for tech companies in an effort to lure more startups to the District.
However, Gray’s tenure in office has also been scarred by ongoing investigations of political corruption, with allegations that his 2010 campaign was “shadow” funded by businessman Jeffrey Thompson. Right before the election, Thompson testified that Gray allegedly knew about the “shadow campaign,” which may have contributed to his defeat in the election.
During Gray’s farewell address, he will highlight “the many accomplishments” of his administration and share thoughts on “continuing the progress the District has made over the last four years.
