In their ongoing effort to compete with services like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar, the D.C. Taxicab Commission announced today that the e-hailing app its developing will begin beta testing in March.
According to a release, the app is currently being developed by DCTC technical staff and, once it’s ready, it’ll be given to an “industry co-op” for management and marketing. The DCTC is currently adopting new regulation that will require D.C. taxicabs to use the app for people to hail a cab electronically. “This rulemaking will give the District’s taxicab industry a tool to compete with Transportation Network Companies (TNCs),” the release states.
Beta testing for the app, called the “Universal DC TaxiApp,” will begin in March of 2015, and, while all on-duty taxicabs will be required to use it, drivers can still use other digital dispatch services. Just like other e-hailing apps (RIP Hailo), the “Universal DC TaxiApp” will allow riders to pay by pre-loading credit card information, by credit card in the Taxi, or, just like old times, with cash.
