Mayor Gray’s administration and the Council have reached an agreement to fully fund the city’s portion of the $300 million D.C. United stadium plan.

On December 2, the Council unanimously gave initial approval to a deal that will bring a soccer stadium to Buzzard Point in Southwest D.C., but only after a land swap with developer Akridge for the Reeves Center at 14th and U streets NW was removed. Council Chair Phil Mendelson proposed making up the funding difference with a supplemental budget, which at the time Gray was refusing to transmit.

But, according to the Mayor, the dispute is over.

“Today, I am pleased to transmit a supplemental budget that will fully finance the District’s portion of the new Buzzard Point development,” Gray said at a press conference today. The Council will consider the budget and take a final vote on the plan on Tuesday, December 16.

The plan is supported by both Mendelson and Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser, who takes over in January.

Gray said the supplemental budget — “a sticking point along the way” — will only focus on the soccer stadium and additional projects will not be added. “We’re focusing on fully funding the soccer stadium,” Mendelson later added.

D.C.’s funding commitment to the plan is capped at $150 million. With the Reeves Center out of the deal, the city may be forced to use eminent domain to obtain land needed in the area.
