Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to protest the killings of unarmed black men, women and children by police.

The protesters, who gathered at Freedom Plaza before marching up Pennsylvania Avenue NW to the Capitol, were joined by family members of some of these victims, including Michael Brown and Tamir Rice. While many families at the march saw no indictment in the homicide of their loved one, Rice’s death at age 12 was ruled a homicide just one day before the march.

“Let that officer get arrested and bring him in front of a criminal jury so he can get the opportunity to prove his innocence and we can prove our justice,” Rice’s mother, Samaria Rice, said. “My son was 12 years old, just a baby, a baby, my baby, the youngest out of four.”

Thousands similarly gathered in New York City on the same day for the Millions March rally, which shut down the Brooklyn Bridge.
