Another day, another local institution announces it’s closing.

Heller’s Bakery, a staple of the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood since 1922, is closing up shop for good. PoPville first reported the news and an employee at Heller’s confirmed it over the phone. Heller’s last day open will be Sunday, afterwards, it’s closing up for good.

Why? “It’s a long story,” the employee said over the phone. Here’s the statement given to PoPville:

“We failed to make an agreement with the landlord to extend our lease. We are going to close for Christmas and Friday the 26th. However, we are going to open Saturday the 27th and last day Sunday the 28th, as a goodbye to all the supporters during the past years. We are on a search for a new location.”

We reached out to Heller’s management to find out what the full story is and if it’ll reopen again. We’ll update when we find out more.
