A California lawmaker wants to ban four public schools from using the name and mascot shared by Washington’s football team.

Assemblyman Luis Alejo introduced a bill this month, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, that would require the schools phase out the name by 2017.

“There’s no reason why we can’t get that accomplished and phase out that particular derogatory term from our public high schools,” Alejo told the Monterey County Herald. “Here we are so many years later, and still fighting the same fight to have respect for our Native American communities in California.”

Led by Alejo, the California Assembly passed a resolution last year to to urge Washington’s NFL team to change its name, according to the Monterey County Herald. The latest effort also comes in response to the push to rename the team.

D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie introduced a bill earlier this year that would require schools to stop using race-based nicknames and mascots. The bill was referred to committee, but did not move past that point during the most recent Council period.
