Since the beginning of this winter’s influenza season, 110 cases have been reported to D.C.’s Department of Health.

Hospitals reported 37 cases, according to a D.C. DOH spokesperson, while no pediatric deaths have been reported.

In D.C., Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia — Region 3, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control — 1,902 cases of influenza have been reported since September 28 with one pediatric death reported. That number is now 15 children nationwide, an epidemic level.

Twenty-two states are experiencing high influenza-like illness activity. “Data were insufficient to calculate an [influenza-like illness] activity level from the District of Columbia,” according to the CDC.

D.C. is reporting “local” influenza activity, as opposed to no activity, sporadic, regional or widespread.

Update: A reader reminded us to include Google’s flu trends, which shows a high level of search activity for terms associated with the illness.
