Dish of the Week: Grilled skewers
Where: BUL, CopyCat Co.
The Weekly Feed’s New Year’s resolution is to eat more food on a stick. We think it should be yours as well. The Japanese were on to something with yakitori, skewers of grilled meat, veggies, or offal typically scarfed down with a cold beer. The recently shuttered Kushi Izakaya specialized in skewer-based dining, but two newcomers have stepped in to fill the void in our stomaches.
CopyCat Co. (1110 H Street NE) is a must-visit for anyone who loves classic cocktails, and the full restaurant menu can also be ordered at the upstairs bar. Snacks include Chinese dumplings, steamed buns, and, most importantly, grilled meat on a stick. The spicy cumin-rubbed lamb skewers brought me back to nights in Beijing, where men in round white caps would grill the meat curbside. They’re excellent for washing down a cold beer, or in CopyCat Co.’s case, a sharp, gingery mule or buck.
BUL (2441 18th Street NW) is so new they don’t even have a liquor license, but you can still enjoy their selection of grilled meats and veggies sans booze. BUL is the latest from Sakuramen owners Jay Park and Jonathan Cho, and serves a combination of traditional Korean comfort food and bar snacks. Diners can build an entire meal out of skewers which run the gamut from miso-brushed eggplant and bacon-wrapped asparagus to pork neck and chicken gizzards.
Small Bites
Where to eat and drink in 2015
The new year promises to bring plenty more restaurants to our fair city. Young and Hungry and Eater have run-downs of 2015’s most anticipated openings. Gird your stomaches for double the Jose Andres with China Chilcano and Beefsteak, Filipino food from Bad Saint, a bigger, better Columbia Room, and more.
International house of endless pancakes
Is it possible to ever have too many pancakes? Diners can test this theory at IHOP (3100 14th Street NW) from now until February 8 during the chain’s “All You Can Eat Pancakes” promotion. An unlimited stream of buttermilk pancakes awaits any glutton who orders a short stack or combo meal, New Year’s resolutions be damned.
