Perhaps one of the best arguments in favor of D.C. hosting the 2024 Olympic Games is that it would mean the city will need to make some drastic measures to make public transportation—like the Metro—more reliable. Case in point: This weekend, all but one Metro line will undergo scheduled weekend track work. Here, take a look:

Red Line

Trains every 10-20 minutes.

  • From 10 p.m. Friday through closing Sunday, Red Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont.
  • On Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., additional trains will run between Van Ness & Silver Spring, resulting in service every 10 to 12 minutes between these stations.

Work Performed: Rehabilitation of floating concrete slabs and joint elimination for a safer, smoother ride between Friendship Heights & Van Ness; track, fastener and insulator renewal for more reliable service between Silver Spring & Wheaton.

Orange Line

Orange Line trains will operate every 16 minutes throughout the weekend.

Work Performed: Rail fastener renewal and joint elimination for a safer, smoother ride between Clarendon & Ballston.

Silver Line
