While National Transportation Safety Board investigators are currently working to find what exactly caused the tunnel and a train just outside the L’Enfant Metro station to fill with smoke on Monday, the family of the incident’s sole victim has started a memorial fund.
Carol Glover, the 61-year-old mother and grandmother from Alexandria, was killed in Monday’s incident, despite the desperate attempts from fellow passengers and firefighters to save her life. Members of Glover’s family are looking to raise $10,000 “[towards] funeral or general unplanned expenses.”
Glover, a mother of two had just welcomed two new grandchildren into her life in 2014. “Carol was looking forward to watching her grandchildren grow up,” her family writes on their GoFundMe page. “She had so many fun plans for them. She understood and loved her sons well. She always had the right words to help them navigate the ups and down of life. She was quick to listen and give good, measured advice. She had a smile that could light up a room and was profoundly grateful for all she had.”
NTSB investigators are still trying to figure out what exactly caused a “electrical arcing event” on a third rail that caused the Metro train Glover was stuck in to fill with smoke. In a press conference yesterday, Mayor Muriel Bowser said that “Residents deserve a safe, and reliable Metro system,” and her administration “will work with regional partners in Virginia and Maryland to make that happen.”
Despite reports that emergency responders took as long as 30 minutes to evacuate passengers from the smoke-filled train, Bowser also said that the fire department “responded within the time frames that are customary.”
