In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there’s a whole host of events commemorating the late, great civil rights leader all around the city.
Mayor Muriel Bowser kicked off the first of several events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy with a wreath-laying ceremony at his Memorial this morning.
In Southeast, a Peace Walk and Parade is currently happening along Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue until about 3 p.m. As a result, Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue will be closed between the 2700 block to the 4200 block, as well as streets leading up to the parade.
At 2 p.m., the National Cathedral will kick off its celebration of Dr. King with an of performances, featuring African Heritage Dancers and Drummers, Melvin Deal, director; the Howard Gospel Choir of Howard University, Reginald A. Golden, musical director; spoken-word artist Tika Wallace; soloist Francese Brooks and dancer Mahkai Carroll; Bishop Walker boy’s choir; WPA Children of the Gospel Choir. Tierra Burke, and Tony Donaldson and Micha Green from the Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts. More info available here.
Additionally, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate MLK Day with a performance by Natalie Cole and the Let Freedom Ring Choir. That starts at 6 p.m. and info on how to get free tickets can be found here.
