Last year, we rounded up a list of places and dance nights in D.C. that aren’t totally lame. At least, in our opinion. Places where, you won’t find sweaty people in tight clothing grinding up on each other like a cheese grater, but rather, inebriated masses cuttin’ rug like it’s Footloose (OK, maybe not that good, but you catch my drift). Thing is, there’s more to that list. In addition to new dance nights that we missed, there’s new ones that popped and, well, DJ nights that may not exactly inspire spontaneous rug cutting, but are nonetheless worth checking out. Behold, more dance parties and DJ nights we don’t think are awful (in fact, we quite like!)

RIGHT ROUND UP! @ BLACK CAT: Those who firmly believe that the golden years of pop music (sorry Beyonce, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, etc.) were the ’80s need not look further than the Black Cat’s Right Round Up! dance night, with DJ lil’e. Spinning the best ’80s alt-pop, this is basically Gen-Xers night. In addition to Right Round Up!, Black Cat also occasionally hosts other ’80s vs. DJ nights, usually centered around the music of The Cure, The Smiths/Morrissey, Depeche Mode, etc. They rule.
The next Right Round Up! takes place on February 21. Black Cat is located at 1811 14th Street NW.
ANY DJ AT SHOWTIME EVER: Any time there’s a DJ spinning at Showtime, the small watering hole in Bloomingdale, go. Trust me. Pretty much every Saturday night, there’s great, old school soul playing (whether it’s courtesy of owner SoulCall Paul, or one of the many guest DJs that frequent). Sunday nights is reserved for Modern Talk, an “all vinyl modern soul, boogie, & cheese wave party,” which is as fantastic as it sounds. Seriously, any time you walk by and see a DJ spinning. Go in.
Showtime is located at 113 Rhode Island Avenue NW.
NO SCRUBS @ 9:30 CLUB: Because you love the ’90s and nostalgia fetishization is so in right now, of course you’re going to love the semi-regular ’90s dance party that is No Scrubs. DJs Will Eastman and Brian Billion spin what they call “guilty pleasure” ’90s anthem at the 9:30 Club for a massive dance party that’s essentially a Buzzfeed listicle IRL.
9:30 Club is located at 815 V Street NW.
DISCNOTHÈQUE @ DC9: What’s the worst thing about trying to bust a move on the dance floor? Bumping into some square standing in the middle fiddling around on their cell phone. Not at Discnothèque, DC9’s technology-free dance party party that requires you to check your cell phone upon entry in order to “remove yourself from the constant barrage of every day life and reconnect the music.” Because, #YOLO.
The next Discnothèque is tonight at 10 p.m. DC9 is located at 1940 9th Street NW.
WE FOUGHT THE BIG ONE @ MARX CAFE: Perhaps the nerdiest (and, for the most part, least danciest) DJ night in D.C. is Marx Cafe’s monthly “Belgian beer-fueled post-punk DJ night.” For more than ten years, We Fought The Big One has hosted a number of regular and guest DJs to spin the best post-punk, krautrock, alternative, britpop, or whatever.
Marx Cafe is located at 3203 Mount Pleasant Street NW.
LIBERATION DANCE PARTY @ DC9: Because dance parties are always more fun with music videos, there’s DC9’s Liberation Dance Party. Rather than relying on the same old songs, the LDP, which has been happening since 2004 (!) showcases whatever the new popular underground tunes are, often with music video accompaniment.
The next Liberation Dance Party is Saturday, February 14. DC9 is located at 1940 9th Street NW
PUNK ROCK KARAOKE: OK, so this isn’t technically a dance or DJ night, but it is, consistently, the best fucking party in the city. Every few months, Punk Rock Karaoke invades the Black Cat’s backstage, giving people the opportunity to hop onstage and scream along to their favorite punk songs. Eventually, everyone kinda joins in and it turns into a giant mosh pit/dance party. So there, it is a dance party, I guess.
The next Punk Rock Karaoke is tonight at 9 p.m. and benefits Alley Cat Allies. Black Cat is located at 1811 14th Street NW.
CHAD AMERICA’S ANNUAL VALENTINE’S DAY ROCK & ROLL DANCE PARTY: Easily my favorite annual dance party, Black Cat’s beloved bartender Chad America hosts a kick-ass dance party every Valentine’s Day in Black Cat’s backstage. It doesn’t suck and you should go to this year’s edition (it’s free!).
Black Cat is located at 1811 14th Street NW.
