TUESDAY

Rock & Roll Hotel: Damien Jurado and Moonlight Detective 8 p.m., $15

WEDNESDAY

Grizfolk @ Black Cat. 8 p.m. $10- $12

Grizfolk, the five-member band out of Sweden-by-way-of Los Angeles, has a pop-centric, up-tempo sound with a typically Swedish emphasis on memorable melody and catchy hooks. Their first album, Sparks, came out last year to great reviews, and the band’s song “Way Back When” was included in the animated movie, Mr. Peabody and Sherman. To get a sense of their sound, check out their single, “Hymnals“. It’s the type of tune you would as easily blast in your car on the highway as you would rock out to at a live show. You’ll get your chance this Wednesday. —Caroline Baxter

Natalie Prass and Lady Lady @ DC9. 9 p.m., $13-$15

Natalie Prass’s self-titled debut is an instant classic that’s sound indebted to smart choices of Spacebomb production team. Prass’s feather-light voice pairs exceptionally well with the flourishes of strings and meaty horns. Though the music is a standout, it is Prass’s witty lyrics that are the highlight, touching on love, loss and the hardships of relationships. Prass is headlining DC9 with Land Lady on Wednesday and with all of the blog attention she’s been getting it is close to selling out. If you want to see a soon-to-be star at one of the smallest rooms in D.C. be sure to get your tickets fast. —Rohan Mahadevan

Sixth and I Synagogue: Kevin Devine and Into It. Over It. with Laura Stevenson. 8 p.m., $15-18

9:30 Club: Laura Tsaggaris v. Justin Jones and the B-sides. 7 p.m., $20

THURSDAY

Pinkwash, Puff Pieces, Sneaks @ Black Cat (Backstage). 8 p.m., $10.

Thursday’s “local” show at the Black Cat might only technically feature one band from D.C. proper, with Pinkwash hailing from Philadelphia and Sneaks from Baltimore. However, over the past two years the politically charged punk and experimental forces of each band, along with their heavier sound have made them favorites around town, playing consistent shows at various DIY venues and spaces. Puff Pieces channels a wispier, classic punk vibe that’s made them known for intense, intellectual live performances. Combined with Pinkwash’s power-punk melodies and the sparse, spoken word-esque bass rhythms of Sneaks, this all star bill is the next rendition of yet another excellent punk show at the backstage. — Quinn Myers

FRIDAY

Rock & Roll Hotel: Black Masala and Congo Sanchez. 11 p.m., $15.

American Art Museum: Luce Unplugged Community Showcase featuring Art Sorority for Girls & Lowercase Letters. 6 p.m., free.

SATURDAY

DC Music Download’s Three-Year Anniversary Show with Paperhaus (album release), Loud Boyz, Baby Bry Bry & The Apologists, and DJ Ayescold @ 9:30 Club. 7 p.m., $16.

Anyone who’s followed the local underground rock scene in the past few years can attest to the talents and onstage charisma of every one of these acts. The bands seem to play at least once a week at small clubs or house venues—and yet, D.C. clearly hasn’t tired of them. Why is that? Come Saturday and find out. Varying from punk to power-pop to psych-rock, and unpredictable electronic mixes, this show really does have something for everyone. Not only are we celebrating the 3rd birthday of local music blog DC Music Download, but we’re also celebrating the release of Paperhaus’ debut album (the boys are fresh off a First Listen, as well!) And, finally, $1 from every ticket sale benefits the D.C. Public Library’s punk archive. If you could only go to one show for the rest of the year, this one might take the cake. Full disclosure: DCist contributor Alex Tebeleff plays in Paperhaus. —Tori Kerr
