Even though D.C. is supposedly the best city in the country for drivers of ride-hailing services like Uber, not everyone is thrilled with how the company pays it’s drivers. Mainly, the inability for passengers to tip their drivers via the app.
That’s why Peter Faris, an Uber driver in the D.C. area for the past two-and-a-half years, started a petition. He’s hoping that 10,000 signatures will be enough to get the attention of Uber co-founder and CEO Travis Kalanick. And with 9,509 signatures at the time of writing, he’s close.
Currently, the Uber app includes a 20 percent tip by default when you use the Uber-taxi parnership UberTAXI, but for UberX, UberBlack, and UberSUV drivers, there’s no way for passengers to tip them other than with straight cash. (And when you’re using an app that allows you to pay for your fare electronically, who would think to tip with cash?)
“Considering many drivers rely on Uber as a primary income source, it makes sense to allow them to earn a little extra money when passengers feel they’ve done a good job,” Faris writes on the petition page. “Tipping is customary in the transportation service sector. As many riders no longer carry cash, a tipping feature integrated into the app (perhaps offered as an option when the rider rates the driver) would benefit drivers by adding to their earnings and job satisfaction.”
Though Uber drivers can’t be tipped electronically, drivers for competing services like Lyft and Sidecar can be tipped electronically via their app.
