Add this one to the piling list of safety concerns of the H Street-Benning Road streetcar: Flash fires.
At 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, the District Department of Transportation says that a brief flash fire was ignited on the top of a streetcar in simulated service. The fire was extinguished quickly on its own and fire fighters didn’t need to put it out when they responded to the incident. Furthermore, DDOT says that no injuries were reported and that the streetcar operator “was safe due to the vehicle’s insulation from electrical current.”
Power to the streetcar was cut after the fire broke out and was subsequently towed back to the yard. Afterwards, another streetcar was put into operation and ran without any issues.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the streetcar team and the vehicle’s manufacturer. This, of course, doesn’t look too good for the projected opening of the streetcar, which has been pushed back indefinitely by Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration, who said in a statement that it won’t begin service until the city determines it’s safe and ready.
