A Denver-bound United Airlines flight had to turn back and return to Dulles International Airport after an unruly passenger allegedly charged toward the cockpit.
According to multiple reports, the passenger was subdued by several passengers near first class before he made it to the cockpit, the Post reports. A Reddit user whose father was on the plane posted pictures and a video of the incident and says that the passenger in question “was screaming and sprinting towards the cockpit” before he was tackled and subdued by “several large passengers.”
A government official with “direct knowledge of the incident” told CNN that the passenger was screaming “jihad, jihad” while charged toward the cockpit. The plane, which returned to Dulles shortly after it took off at 10:15 last night, had 33 passengers and six crew members on board.
A spokesman for United Airlines offered few details of the incident, only issuing a statement saying that the passenger “failed to comply with crew instructions.” The Post reports that Kimberly Gibbs, a spokeswoman for the agency that oversees Dulles Airport, says that the passenger was “transported to a local hospital for evaluation.”
The Post also spoke with a passenger, Donna Tillam, who was aboard the plane during the incident and described it as the “scariest moment” of her life:
In a text, Tillam told her husband that “some crazy guy just tried to get into the cockpit.” She also wrote that three passengers took the person down, right at her feet near her first-class seat.
No passengers were injured and the man who was arrested didn’t have a bomb or any weapon on him, authorities say. CNN reports that a preliminary background check of the man doesn’t [s]uggest he has a connection to terrorists.”
