Chief Ike’s Mambo Room is having its last dance on Saturday night after nearly 25 years as an Adams Morgan staple.

“Chief Ike’s has simply run its course and Al Jiricowic (the Owner), would like to get out of the business,” the bar’s manager, Alan Beal, tells DCist. “Demographical changes and more night life development in other areas have caused a decline in Adam’s(sic) Morgan.”

He added that even with a 40 percent increase in weekend sales since January, the bar still isn’t generating enough revenue to be profitable. “The owner would like to thank EVERYONE in Adam’s(sic) Morgan and DC for their patronage,” Beal said.

The kitschy, dark, often sticky dive-y bar was once a draw for young politicos—George Stephanopoulos was a regular in the ’90s. Randomly enough, Jenna and Barbara Bush paid a visit in 2004. In more recent years, its been known as something of a refuge from the 18th Street crowds, as well as the home of a popular weekly comedy night.

“I feel proud of what we achieved,” said Matt Dundas, who has been running the Thursday night comedy event since 2013. “We set out to give a stage to new comics and experienced ones alike, with a clear mission: give stage time to anyone who wants it.”

He recalled a show where anyone could get on stage and anything might happen—including a night where comics swapped their sets with other comics, near fights between comedians and audience members, a dog peeing on the stage … you get the idea.

Dundas is already planning another weekly comedy night in Adams Morgan on Tuesdays at the soon-to-open The High Dive, which is coming to the old Pharmacy Bar space. Their mission is to “remain a dive bar in the midst of all the Adams Morgan craziness,” High Dive co-owner Tristan Magee told Express. Maybe they can get the bathroom fixtures from Chief Ike’s?

Beal could not comment on what might go in Chief Ike’s place.
