When word broke that an eager and inspired 24-year-old had left her management consulting job to open up the city’s first cat cafe, people were stoked, to put it lightly.

Of course, saying you’re going to open a cat cafe is a whole lot easier than actually doing it—the permit process alone is, naturally, difficult when you want to open a place where you can buy food and adopt kittens. Luckily, Crumbs & Whiskers have cleared their big hurdle. The cafe’s founder and owner, Kanchan Singh, tells DCist that they got zoning approval today and are “solidly tracking towards a summer opening.”

Earlier this month, Singh launched a Kickstarter to raise funds for the overhead costs. It was wildly successful reaching its $15,000 goal within days (it’s now at $26,924 with 14 days left to go).

At the time, Singh wrote that they were in the process of signing a lease and have filed for a Zoning Special Exemption for the specific property they’re leasing, which she estimated would be the most complicated process of opening the cafe. She’s since locked down the lease (it’ll be in Georgetown, so long as the lease goes through) and got the zoning permits needed.

Phew, otherwise that would’ve been a cat-astrophe! (I’m so sorry).
