The safety of Metro—not only for passengers, but for its workers—has been a huge concern as of late. In January, an electrical arcing event caused massive smoking on a pair of trains near the L’Enfant Plaza platform, leading to the death of one passenger.

Thus, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689—the Metro worker’s union—is holding a public hearing tonight on Metro safety to address the growing safety concerns. Tonight’s hearing will be moderated by Local 689 president Jackie Jeter and WMATA interim general manager Jack Requa, and will feature a dozen panelists, including a host of longtime Metro emplyees, Greater Greater Washington editor-in-chief David Alpert, the ATU International’s director of government affairs Jeff Rosenberg, and more.

The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. tonight in the lower level assembly room of the New York Ave Presbyterian Church (1313 New York Avenue NW).
