A major project to rebuild the 16th Street Bridge, which spans Military Road, is about to enter its most “impactful”—read: commute delaying—phase.
Starting on Friday, there will only be one lane open in both directions on 16th Street NW and only one eastbound lane on Military Road will be open. Additionally, on some weekends (including this upcoming one), Military Road will be completely closed. The work is expected to last until July.
And it won’t only affect drivers. Many of the S-Line buses, which run north-south on 16th Street, will detour around the construction zone. Metro also warns of service changes and delays on some of the east-west D and E buses.
“Commuters and residents should prepare for major, ongoing delays on 16th Street and Military Road; and the adjacent arteries during construction,” the District Department of Transportation said in a statement.
In fact, the project is so massive that it even has its own website and Twitter account. In addition to replacing the 57-year-old bridge, DDOT is also putting in a new stone-faced median barrier, improving the roadway’s storm drainage and installing improvements to the traffic signal and street lights. Work on the project began in October, but none of the previous construction was as disruptive as this upcoming phase.
As the Post’s Dr. Gridlock put it: “This is really going to hurt.”
