A planned mixed-use development at Florida and Sherman Avenues NW will be anchored by a new Whole Foods, sources tell the Washington Business Journal.

The project, which is located near Howard University at 965 Florida Avenue NW, has been dubbed The Griffith.

Neighbors and people who are riveted by the District’s real estate drama might remember this as the site of a somewhat controversial decision by the city to award the project to MRP Realty. Most people had expected it to go to JBG Companies, which owns the parcel next door and had proposed a Harris Teeter as well as an extension of W Street.

The two former competitors later partnered up, but additional progress on the plans has been slow going.

MRP and JBG haven’t yet submitted revised plans to the city, according to the Washington Business Journal, so it might still be years before residents get their organic buckwheat.
