A two-alarm house fire left two people critically injured this morning in Columbia Heights.

Three firefighters were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries after responding to the blaze, which was reported around 6:30 a.m. at the 1000 block of Kenyon Street NW. Nine people who lived in neighboring homes were displaced, according to the fire department.

Fire department spokesman Oscar Mendez said it took about a half an hour to put out the flames. A cause has not yet been determined, he said.

The Post, which first reported the fire, reports that the occupants were an elderly couple:

As firefighters investigated, a woman raced up to the porch of a house next to the one that caught fire and talked with neighbors. A few minutes later, she began crying; her wailing could be heard down the street.

Gigi Matthews, 40, who lives across the street, said the woman is the couple’s daughter who frequently stops by to check on her parents. “She was asking us if they were alive,” Matthews said.

NBC4 has reported that one person has died, though the fire department was unable to confirm that report.
