Mayor Muriel Bowser is kicking off a new health and fitness initiative on Saturday called FitDC at the Takoma Recreation Center.
FitDC “encourages residents to live a healthier lifestyle by linking them to nutrition and physical fitness resources in their communities, including official FitDC coaches who can offer guidance on making healthy lifestyle choices,” according to a release.
Residents can also apply to be FitDC coaches, and officials will outline how they can “audition” for those roles on Saturday.
Bowser will be joined at the event by Brenda Donald, the deputy mayor for Health and Human Services; Dr. LaQuandra S. Nesbitt, the director of the D.C. Department of Health; and Keith A. Anderson, the acting director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
It will feature healthy food demonstrations and free samples, as well as Zumba, line dancing, and other activities. After the announcement, Bowser will take a walk through her home ward with residents.
Launching FitDC fulfills one of Bowser’s campaign promises as well as a program she outlined in her transition plan.
As Mayor, Muriel Bowser will lead the District’s efforts to promote healthy living and reduce the incidence of chronic diseases, with the launch of FitDC, a government-wide initiative to comprehensively assess the District’s efforts to promote healthy living and encourage District residents to be fit and healthy. The effort, to be led collaboratively by the Executive Office of the Mayor (EOM), Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Department of Health (DOH), will compliment and bolster Live Well DC, but also focus on promoting access to parks and other recreation and sporting facilities, to ensure that all District residents who desire to lead a more healthy and active lifestyle have the ability to do so.
Interested exercisers can RSVP for free tickets here.
And we’ll all keep our fingers crossed the mayor has taken some dance lessons from Michelle.
