How can Veep, the razor-sharp HBO comedy about fictional Vice President Selina Meyer go on without it’s Commander-in-Chief, Armando Iannucci? Well, we’re about to find out as The Hollywood Reporter reports that he’s stepping down as showrunner after four seasons.
The reason? Family and whatnot. From HBO via THR:
“We have had conversations with Armando for some time about the challenges of maintaining his family life in London and producing a show in the states,” an HBO rep said in a statement. “Armando is not replaceable but we are confident that Veep will continue to be produced at the highest levels with new showrunner David Mandel. David has worked with HBO for many years as executive producer, writer and director for Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Sure, Mandel is a fitting choice to take over, but Veep is so distinctly Iannucci’s brand of comedy, it’s hard to see it under anyone else’s control. Of course, Veep hasn’t been picked up for a fifth season yet (it most likely will, though), so who knows what’ll happen.
As for Iannucci, he says he’s working on a comedy about the death of Stalin, which will be great, because everything that man touches is comedy gold. Anyway, the fourth season returns to HBO Sunday at 10:30 p.m. Per usual, DCist will be recapping episodes this season. Long live Veep!
