Women in the District of Columbia earn $.91 on the dollar compared to men. And that is the closest the country comes to pay parity. In a ranking of states (and D.C.), New York comes in at number two with women earning $.86 to the dollar.
Nationally, the average is just $.78. And it is even worse for women of color; African American women earn $.64 cents and Latinas are paid $.56 for every dollar paid to white men.

The D.C.-based nonprofit National Partnership for Women & Families is highlighting those figures, which are based on 2013 Census data, ahead of Equal Pay Day—the symbolic date of how far into the year the average woman would have to work to match what a man would have earned in the year before alone.
According to the American Association of University Women, the median salary for men in D.C. is $67,610, while the corresponding figure for women is $61,760.
Incremental though it might be, D.C.’s gender wage gap is actually an improvement from last year, when it was $.90. It is also the smallest gap in the country by a long shot—at least in comparison to states (obligatory caveat: comparing statistics from an entirely urban area to a state isn’t particularly meaningful).
Meanwhile, Maryland comes in at $.85 to the dollar, just behind New York, while Virginia is around the national average at $.79 to the dollar.
As with last year, a number of local organizations are marking Equal Pay Day with specials and discounts. AAUW is having an unHappy Hour, featuring a cash bar plus “pep talks” from equal pay experts. Lean In DC is hosting a 22 percent-off happy hour with Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Rosa DeLauro. And a number of local businesses are offering 22 percent off, including:
- DCanter
- Rent the Runway
- UrbanStems
- LaTomate
- SculptDC
- Uber (for new users)
- iRicchi
- StyleCable
- Hank’s on the Hill
