Well that was fun while it lasted. After its annual month-long hiatus of scheduled track work, Metro will resume weekend track work on Friday.

After such a long break, you’d expect the Metro system to be completely screwed this weekend, but that’s not the case. Actually, the Orange, Silver, Blue, and Yellow lines will operate under a normal weekend schedule. Here’s what’s going on with the other lines:

Red Line

Trains every 8-15 minutes.

Red Line trains will operate as follows throughout the weekend:

  • Between Shady Grove and Glenmont: every 15 minutes
  • Between Grosvenor and Silver Spring: every 8-10 minutes Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. -9 p.m. only.

Work Performed: Ballast regulating, joint elimination, track fastener and insulator renewal for a safer ride will cause Red Line trains to share one track between Twinbrook & Shady Grove.

Green Line

Buses replace trains at Greenbelt Station only on Saturday.

Saturday, April 18

  • Green Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between Branch Avenue and College Park.
  • Greenbelt Station will be closed. Free shuttle buses will run between Greenbelt and College Park stations.
  • Riders traveling to or from Greenbelt Station should allow about 15 minutes of additional travel time.

Work Performed: Continued construction of a new test track located between College Park and Greenbelt to accept Metro’s new fleet of 7000-series railcars.

Sunday, April 19 – Regular weekend service. On Sunday, passengers at College Park and Greenbelt will board all trains on the Branch Avenue side of the platform from 8 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
