Dish of the Week: Hot dogs and sausages

Where: Swizzler Foods, The Big Stick, DC-3

Temperatures are warming, the days are getting longer, and baseball season is back. And that means it’s time to fire up the grill and welcome both hot dogs and sausages back into your life. They’re not always gourmet, but a quality beef or pork link is the perfect snack for enjoying this spring weather.

In addition to the obvious ballpark classic and our local classic (the half smoke), D.C. has a number of new tasty options for pork and beef links, with toppings that go well beyond the basic condiments.

Next time you head to the Nationals game, grab a pre- or post-game meal at The Big Stick (20 M St. SE). The newly-opened bar serves a global menu of sausages ranging from $8 to $13, including half smokes, German sausages, and Mexican chorizos.

The Swizzler Foods truck is also putting an international flair on the traditional hot dog. Catch them around town and try creations like the Deacon—a dog topped with chili, honey mustard, coleslaw, and Carolina barbecue sauce. Or go for the Greek-inspired Acropolis, served with tzatziki sauce, feta cheese, kalamata olives, red onion, and cherry tomatoes.

Do you have another go-to spot around town to grab a hot dog or sausage sandwich? Let us know in the comments.
