It was a sad day for Silver Spring when a two-alarm fire burned down the Bombay Gaylord Indian restaurant and left its downstairs neighbor—the beloved dive bar Quarry House—out of commission. But now Quarry House is coming back—at least temporarily—in the space formerly occupied by the recently shuttered Piratz Tavern.
On Facebook, Quarry House Tavern announced it’s new temporary location, which opens tonight at 6 p.m. with half-priced burgers (as is the Monday custom at Quarry House.
The rumors are true, we took over the old Piratz space as a temporary home. Join us tonight for friends and family (that’s you) at Quarry House Temporary. Opening doors around 6 ish. (Mostly) half priced burger night. Beer & whiskey list a work in progress. We can’t wait to see you. Come if you can and spread the word (Tonight is CASH only, no cc’s yet). Love, QHT
The kitschy pirate-themed Piratz Tavern closed earlier this month after business had grown stale. Piratz Tavern’s trouble was well documented in an episode of Spike TV’s Bar Rescue that featured the Silver Spring establishment. However, the show didn’t, in fact, rescue the bar and co-owner Tracy Rebelo credits the show as being the ultimate nail in Piratz’s coffin.
“Unfortunately, the aftermath of reality TV has became an unbearable burden,” Tracy said in an email to the Post. “The constant airing of our episode of ‘Bar Rescue’ has had a widespread negative effect on our social media presence. Especially recently it seemed John Taffer was doing his best to personally provoke me on his Facebook page. I can honestly say there were no positive gains by our participation on the show, only negative, and as a result the decision was made not to renew our lease.”
But luckily, the closing of one Silver Spring staple meant another could live to see another day.
