Another day, another fast-casual pizza shop. D.C. is the proud home of the rapidly expanding Ampersand Pizza chain (sylized &pizza). While they colonize, similar operations like DC Pizza, Custom Fuel, and Black Iron Pizza have begun to pop up.

And now, another new one: Pizza Studio, opens today in the heart of Dupont Circle (1333 New Hampshire Avenue NW), next to Buffalo Billiards and The Front Page. Why should you care? Because free pizza: today, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and then again between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., you’ll get free ‘za, with a donation being made by the shop to the Capital Area Food Bank for each pie given away.

Yesterday, we got to test out a complimentary ‘za for ourselves. Like other fast-casual pizza joints, there’s a healthy array of flavorful—if not terribly groundbreaking—topping choices, sauces, and cheeses. The most distinguishing feature is the five crust options including a nutty whole grain and flax seed option, rosemary herb, and firecracker crust made with chili peppers, along with a traditional and a tapioca starch gluten-free option. Dough balls are aerated to remove any bubbles and then pressed into differently colored dotted circles for you to pick out at the start of the assembly line.

Sitting there uncooked, the discs look a bit like an oversized crust from an Oscar Mayer Lunchables box. But after a trip through the toppings station and on through the conveyor belt oven, the pizzas become far fancier as they’re finished with a brush of garlic olive oil, balsamic glaze, or Jamaican jerk seasoning.

The pizzas will run you $7.99 with unlimited toppings, which isn’t bad. After all, it’s plenty tasty. Of course, how could it not be? It’s pizza.
