Metro Transit Police believe they have identified the suspect who allegedly punched and spit on an elderly man at the Eastern Market station last week. Police have obtained an arrest warrant for felony assault.

If convicted, 19-year-old Elijah Smith, whose last known address was in Northeast, could face a prison term of 1.5 times the maximum because of the victim’s age, police said.

The victim reported being pushed by an unknown man as he exited a Metro train on Friday shortly after 1 p.m. The pair argued at the top of the escalator, which wasn’t moving, and the assailant appeared to spit in the victim’s face before punching him three times, surveillance video shows. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of facial injuries, police said.

Anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of Smith is asked to call Metro Transit Police at (202) 962-2121 and reference case 2015-21061.
