Some sad news from the local go-go community: Derek Anthony “House” Colquitt, bassist and manager for local go-go legends Junkyard Band, died Sunday afternoon in a motorcycle crash in Waldorf, Md. He was 47.
A day earlier, Colquitt and the Junkyard Band played the Funk Parade, headlining DC Music Download’s showcase at The Lot at Atlantic Plumbing. According to Charles County Police, Colquitt and his passenger, 34-year-old Jeri Lanelle Whorton, were on a 2013 Harley motorcycle when Colquitt lost control of the motorcycle and struck the back of a 2009 Dodge Ram. Police say the motorcycle then caught fire.
Colquitt was pronounced dead on the scene while Whorton was ejected from the motorcycle and later died of her injuries.
The Junkyard Band, best known for their single “Sardines,” formed in 1980 in the Barry Farm neighborhood of Southeast D.C. They formed as kids, inspired by the local go-go scene, with buckets, cans, and other objects found along the neighborhood as instruments, hence their name.
Over the years, Junkyard became one of the city’s best and well-known go-go groups, along with EU and Trouble Funk. They were featured in the seminal film D.C. Cab and eventually signed with Def Jam Recordings.
